The next Valentine’s Day is Sunday, February 14, 2027
Valentine’s Day is February 14 every year. The next one is Sunday, February 14, 2027. It falls on Monday in 2028 and Wednesday in 2029. The date does not follow a “second Sunday” or “third Monday” rule, so a weekend celebration does not move the occasion to a different day. When writing an invitation, include both the weekday and date to prevent a common mix-up: “Sunday dinner, February 14” is clearer than “Valentine’s weekend.” The observance can be a romantic occasion, a chance to appreciate friends or family, or simply an ordinary day for someone who does not celebrate it. If you are arranging something with another person, ask what they would enjoy rather than assuming an elaborate surprise is expected. The date table below is useful for a calendar entry; it is not a prediction of anyone’s working hours or local events. Why cards became such a recognizable part of the day
Valentine cards have a longer history than modern messaging apps. The American Antiquarian Society preserves more than 3,000 valentines dating from the 1830s to 1900, including handwritten examples, printed designs and cards associated with Worcester, Massachusetts. Its collection description places the rise of fashionable American valentine exchanges in the 1840s and discusses Esther Howland’s card business. Those surviving objects are a useful way to understand the tradition: people selected designs, added words and sent a physical expression of affection. They do not prove that every popular story about the holiday’s beginnings is true. The broader history mixes religious associations, literary traditions and later commercial customs, so a single neat origin story can be misleading. If you want a thoughtful activity, look at a museum or library collection together and notice how paper, images and messages differ across examples. Then make a new card in your own style. Does Valentine’s Day mean a day off?
Valentine’s Day is an observance rather than a U.S. federal holiday. It does not, by itself, establish a Monday closure when February 14 falls on Sunday. In 2027, the following day, Monday, February 15, is the separate federal holiday that OPM calls Washington’s Birthday. That proximity can make a calendar look as though Valentine’s Day has an “observed” Monday, but the two entries have different purposes. Check a school’s, employer’s or organization’s own schedule when you need a definite answer about access or hours. For an original planning example, a Sunday card-making afternoon might work for one household while another person is scheduled to work all weekend. A quick conversation about availability is more useful than assuming the calendar guarantees free time. The same care applies when friends live in different places: put the actual local date and time on a video-call invitation. Our London time guide explains why cross-time-zone plans need more than a clock reading. Sources: OPM’s 2027 schedule and Time and Date.

A simple way to plan a celebration that fits
Choose the kind of time you want together before choosing decorations or a menu. A handwritten note, a walk, a shared breakfast, a phone call or a quiet dinner can each work when it suits the people involved. For an original low-pressure plan, first agree on the day, then decide how long to meet, and finally divide any preparation. If February 14 is inconvenient, celebrate on another day and label the invitation with that actual date. When children are involved, ask the school about its own card-exchange policy rather than assuming every classroom handles the occasion alike. If you are cooking at home, choose food you already know how to prepare and ask about allergies or dietary needs. Our French toast guide offers one breakfast idea, while the tablespoons-in-a-cup guide explains a practical measurement conversion. Keep the plan easy to communicate: state the time, place and what each person is bringing. Thoughtfulness comes from paying attention to someone’s preferences, not from treating the date as a requirement to spend a particular amount.
