What Day Is New Year’s Eve 2026? Dates and Planning Tips

New Year’s Eve 2026 is Thursday, December 31. At midnight, the calendar changes to Friday, January 1, 2027. If you are arranging a dinner, a countdown or an overnight stay, put both dates on the plan so that an after-midnight pickup is not booked for the wrong day.

The late-2026 holiday dates at a glance

U.S. Thanksgiving: Thursday, November 26, 2026.
Christmas Eve: Thursday, December 24, 2026.
Christmas Day: Friday, December 25, 2026.
New Year’s Eve: Thursday, December 31, 2026.
New Year’s Day: Friday, January 1, 2027.

The U.S. Office of Personnel Management’s holiday schedules list Thanksgiving, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. Christmas Eve is the preceding calendar day to Christmas, and New Year’s Eve is the preceding day to New Year’s Day. These two eve dates are calculated from those fixed dates; they are not separate annual federal holidays on that schedule.

Does New Year’s Eve mean a day off?

Do not assume that December 31 is a holiday for your workplace, school or service provider. Check its actual schedule. An early closing, a full closure and normal hours are three different possibilities. The same caution applies to Christmas Eve.

A federal holiday listing is not a timetable for every restaurant, transit service, shop or private employer. If your plan depends on a late train, a reservation or a staffed front desk, verify that specific provider’s date and hours before paying.

Plan the midnight date change carefully

Write “Thursday, December 31” for a gathering before midnight. A ride at 12:30 a.m. after the countdown belongs to Friday, January 1, 2027. Adding “after the New Year’s Eve countdown” can make the intended journey clearer when confirming with another person.

For a remote celebration, include the time zone. Midnight arrives at different moments around the world, so an event advertised as a New Year’s countdown may occur in your afternoon or morning. Use the organizer’s confirmed time, location and time zone rather than assuming a local countdown.

Decide on transport before the evening starts, and make a clear plan for anyone staying overnight. If you are hosting a quiet gathering, ask guests about their preferred departure time rather than assuming everyone wants to stay until midnight.
