How to Clean a Fabric Sofa: Decode W, S, WS and X

Find the sofa’s cleaning code before choosing a cleaner. W generally permits a suitable water-based upholstery treatment, S calls for a water-free solvent method, WS allows either specified route, and X means vacuuming or light brushing only. The maker’s instructions still control: none of these codes automatically authorizes soaking, steam cleaning or washing zippered cushion covers.

Locate the code and identify each component

Look for the furniture care tag, often beneath a cushion or on the underside, and match it to the manufacturer’s guidance. Do not confuse the upholstery code with the fiber-content label. Cotton, polyester and blends can have finishes or backing materials that change how the assembled sofa should be cleaned.

Check whether loose cushions, fixed upholstery and any removable slipcover have different instructions. A zipper may exist for manufacturing rather than home laundering. If the code is missing, ask the maker or a professional upholstery cleaner before testing an arbitrary cleaning solution.

Use the letters to rule out unsuitable methods

W indicates a compatible water-based cleaner, often a specific upholstery shampoo or foam used for spot treatment. It is not permission to pour water onto the sofa. S indicates an appropriate water-free solvent method, with product safety precautions and ventilation; it does not mean any household solvent is acceptable.

WS or W-S permits the applicable water-based or solvent approach described by the maker. X excludes foam and liquid cleaners: use approved vacuuming or light brushing and seek specialist advice for stains. La-Z-Boy’s instructions illustrate why the code and the detailed care directions must be read together.

Vacuum loose soil before addressing a mark

Use a clean upholstery attachment and a suction level suitable for the fabric. Work gently over seating, seams and crevices, removing cushions only where the design allows. Avoid dragging rough tools across loose weaves or snagged threads, and do not assume a powered carpet brush is appropriate.

For a fresh spill, lift solids carefully and blot liquid with a clean absorbent cloth rather than rubbing it outward. On an X-coded fabric, do not add water or cleaner. Keep pets and people off the area while you decide on the permitted next step.

Test and spot clean without saturating the filling

For a cleaning method the maker permits, test a small hidden area and let it dry before judging the result. Look for dye transfer, a ring, texture changes or stiffening. A test that looks fine while wet can reveal damage later, so do not immediately treat the whole seat.

Follow the cleaner’s directions and work with controlled moisture from the outside of the mark inward where appropriate. Do not mix products or improvise a stronger concentration. For solvent-only upholstery, a professional is often the practical option, especially when the correct product or safe ventilation conditions are uncertain.

Dry fully and stop if the problem expands

Allow the treated section to dry according to the furniture instructions before use. Keep cushions positioned as allowed for airflow, but do not remove covers or expose inner filling without permission. Avoid high heat and steam unless specifically approved; a rented extractor is not automatically compatible with W upholstery.

If the mark spreads, a tide line appears or the fabric changes texture, stop and consult a cleaner rather than repeatedly wetting it. Widespread soil, deep liquid penetration and strong persistent odors call for an overall assessment. Keep the code and model information available so a professional can choose a compatible method.
