How to Clean a Microwave Inside and Out

To clean a microwave, let the oven cool, lift out the removable turntable and wipe the interior with a soft, damp cloth. A little mild dish soap can help with greasy splatters if your manual permits it. For dried food, hold a damp cloth against the spot to soften it before wiping. Check the ceiling first if the microwave is mounted above the stove. The tray often gets washed while splatters overhead go unnoticed. Use steam if your microwave manual recommends it

If your model has a Steam Clean setting, follow its instructions for water volume, container and timing. GE specifies ¼ cup (about 60 mL) for the dedicated cycle on certain models. Use a microwave-safe container and let it cool before lifting it out. Heating plain water too long can cause sudden boiling when the container is moved. If your manual gives no steam-cleaning directions, soften the spot with a damp cloth and wipe it by hand. GE Appliances’ Steam Clean instructions · FDA guidance on overheated water

Wash the turntable and wipe the cavity

Let the glass turntable cool before taking it to the sink. Wash it with warm, soapy water and a soft sponge, rinse it, then dry it before putting it back. Follow the manual if the tray or roller ring needs special care. With the tray out, wipe the floor and the track where the rollers sit. Grit left under the ring can make the tray wobble. When you put it back, seat the glass on its drive hub and check that it can turn freely. Whirlpool’s guide to washing the microwave and turntable

Clean the door, handle and controls

Wipe the handle and controls with a soft, lightly damp cloth. Put any permitted cleaner on the cloth first and keep excess liquid away from vents and openings. Wipe where the door meets the frame with a clean cloth and dry the area. Avoid abrasive pads, which can scratch the finish. If the door is bent, the latch is damaged or the door no longer closes firmly, stop using the microwave and follow the manufacturer’s service guidance.
