The U.S. liquid gallon
One U.S. liquid gallon is 3.785411784 liters. For everyday estimates, multiply the gallons by 3.785. A U.S. fuel pump or a U.S. liquid measuring jug uses the liquid gallon.

The imperial gallon
One imperial gallon is 4.54609 liters, about 20 percent larger than a U.S. liquid gallon. If an older British manual gives a capacity in gallons, check whether the unit is imperial before converting.

Convert a five-gallon container
Multiply 5 × 3.785411784 to get about 18.93 liters for a five-U.S.-gallon container. A container rated at five imperial gallons holds about 22.73 liters. Round at the end when the difference matters.

Convert liters back to gallons
Divide liters by 3.785411784 for U.S. liquid gallons, or by 4.54609 for imperial gallons. For example, a 10-liter jug holds about 2.64 U.S. gallons or 2.20 imperial gallons.
